Today we’re joined by light-green inner designer Frith Barbat, of Barbat Design. She partakes some of import insights on the effects of textile production on the environment and the impacts of chemicals in textiles on human health. Frith exhibits us how of import it is to “dig under the covers” when it have-tos doe with textiles!

************

Your constitutional cotton sheets are kind to your skin and your conscience. And the constituent process that matured the cotton was kind to the earth. But have you of all time enquired what happened at the textile mill? Was the rest of the story constituent? It’s a question few enquire.

Textile mills process the cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo or wood fibers into yarn that is woven into fabric. There are over a dozen steps along the way that practice voluminous amounts of water and chemicals. Some of the chemicals are benignant, but most are not. There are clayey metals and organochlorines used in dyeing, phthalates used in impressing, sulfuric acid used in fiber softening, formaldehyde, and PBDE fire-retardants, and others. Some of these have an contiguous effect on the health of people and critters near the mill, but as these chemicals spread through waste water and explosive fumes, the bigger ecosystem is touched on as good. Once the fabric figures your home, the residuary chemicals can scour off, for you to breathe in, ingest or absorb through your skin.

Most every human organ system is susceptible to damage by one or other of these chemicals - from benignant skin irritation all the way up to cancer, leukemia, heart disease, sterility and miscarriage. Chemicals like PBDEs and phthalates are particularly distressful. PBDEs accumulate in the environment, centralizing up the food chain in fat tissue, where they mimic innate hormones in our bodies, making birth defects, miscarriages, cancers, generative abnormalities, low-toned numbers of boy babies being given birth, and low-toned sperm counts - in humans, not barely animals. Phthalates are used in impressing inks and to weaken plastics (oft in toys). They are an animal carcinogen, and cause asthma, allergies and liver damage in humans. And scientists at present surmise that low-toned doses of phthalates can be toxic to fetuses, particularly to the procreative systems of manlike embryos. California has banished them in children’s toys, but they carry on to be expended to publish textiles, including clothing and bed sheets.

Require yourself - if you assume’t desire your child chewing on a toxic toy, what around sleeping on those precious published bed sheets all night?

Cleansing up the milling about process is firmly both monetarily and mentally, but there are mills that have aimed up that challenge. Textile production is the preceding industrial polluter of water on the planet (second only to agriculture overall). In India solo, 425,000,000 gallons of untreated water is released from textile mills every day. Processing the water involves transfering or neutralizing chemicals, reestablishing the right pH, and chilling it, adding to the cost of the completed cloth. Standards that are secure and fresh for the environment, mill-workers and you, from growing to processing to your home, are of import. We can underpin these efforts by looking for and buying textiles that are third-party indorsed. GOTS (Global Constitutive Textile Received) , Cradle to Cradle and SMART are dear certifications to look for.

You’re more probable to obtain these on fabrics bought through a design professional, but wear’t draw a blank your buying power. Narrate retailers what you want - be beforehand of the curve!

By John Addison. Irradiated communities are in the transition from being car-centrical to being people-centrical. Homes, public transportation, and businesses that function neighborhoods are designed in nigh proximity. A people-orientated development ofttimes has a rapid transit station at its center, or at least a bus stop that is ofttimes helped. Goodest to the station are higher density apartments and condos. Streets are live with people and commodious shops. A poor walk from the station is less density and single family homes. Taking the air is the easygoingest way to drive or so.
While the sprawl of many cities forces long permutes, there are three Combined States cities where at least 30 percent of employment is within 3 miles of the cardinal business district: Modern York, San Francisco, and Portland. In these cities, people find oneself it loose to accept sluttish rail or buses between work and home. A surprising number walk. For those that take, they save by moving around fewer miles.
As David Niebauer designated out in his article about REDD, deforestation is a major contributor of GHG. Suburban sprawl leads to deforestation and to loss of land needed for agriculture.
In California, there is a firm interest in desegregating transportation planning, regional development, and climate solution planning. Last week, 240 leaders of government, secret industry, and non-profit leaders converged at CALSTART ’s Target 2030 conference. Vehicles, fires, and transportation planning were themes for many speakers and discussions.
Shelley Poticha, CEO of Reconnecting America , rode the statistic that if someone can walk to transit, they are 5 times more probable to utilise public transit and simply take half the miles of those who cannot walk to transit. Reconnecting America works with substantial estate developers and transit agencies to formulate more housing within taking the air distance from transit, services, and sponsoring.
Mary Nichols, Chairwoman, California Air Resources Board, claimed center stage as a fundamental executive in following up California’s Climate Solutions law – one of the world’s most comprehensive approaches to deoxidizing world warming up. Some of the implementations are complex, such as the low-toned carbon fuel standard. Other solutions are more square. She remarked that California could scale down its petroleum consumption by 5 percent if everyone took the air an additional half-mile day by day or else of shrouding the distance in a car.
Some cities with sound urban planning reach it soft for people to live near work, friends, and fun. Portland has restricted the boundaries of the city and invested in speedy transit. The results are telling. The citizens of Portland redeem $2.6 billion per year, estimates economist Joe Cortright, Fourth-year Fellow with The Brookings Institute.
Learning from the success of cities such as Portland, California overtook a law (SB 375) involving regions to formulate desegregated urban and transportation plans that scale down long exchanges and scale down regional greenhouse gas emissions.
Michael McKeever, Executive Director, Sacramento Area Council of Governments, placed a major opportunity for Boomers who desire littler homes with more community services. Fifty percent of newfangled California home sales could be for this target market.
Baby Boomers, specifically 78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, are taking up to switch to exploit that takes less travel and allows more fulfillment. Some will retire in the next few years; most will reinvent how they last and realize money. Millions of these Boomers will speed the shift to newfangled urbanization as they move from the suburbs to cities. Freed from the demands of calling for single cars for foresightful day by day permutes to act, they will find that it is well-situated to hold up “car-unclouded” or car liberal in a city.
Modern urban development could make millions of jobs in construction, public transportation, and infrastructure. Reaching it a reality is not leisurely. California is confronting a $40 billion budget deficit, making sturdy choices such as newfangled gasoline or sales tax, or major cuts in education, health care, and emergency services. The 480 cities which require to plan for the next lack funds for comprehensive planning. More urban density asks infrastructure upgrades from sewer pipes to reliable electrical grids.
City living is not for everyone. Many opt to levy families in the suburbs with their dream homes within gated communities and their jobs sited miles off. In the suburbs, the environmentally witting share rides in hybrid vehicles , work at home at least a day per week, and are canny about geting their fingers do the taking the air. Others bask rural living near communities oriented around producing, ranching, mountains, and water.
Sixty-five percent of Americans live in the top 100 metropolitan areas. In cities, millions rule work and recreate commodious. Some estimate that two-thirds of the urban areas that will exist in 2030 do not live today. This chips in us an unbelievable opportunity to develop in a sustainable way with dear-zero emission transportation.
As I questioned uncounted people, geting together their stories and ideas for Save Gas, Save the Planet, urbanites pitched a ordered message - people sleeping in cities combust less gas and make less planetary warming up than those sleeping in suburbs and rural areas. In cities, trips to grocery stores, friends, and work are oft done by taking the air. Loose rail and bus service is predictable and tight in cities. In cities, everything is closer unitedly.

Copyright © 2009 John Addison. This article lets in excerpts from John’s raw book – Save Gas, Save the Planet – to be published on March 25, 2009. John Addison prints the Neat Fleet Report. Last year, John and his wife moved from suburbia to the city, dwelling 2 blocks from public transportation, at present John’s basal mode of travel.

As we are drawing close the completion of the 100K House, we have been devoting more thought to the internal design of the home. After all, today that we are moving into the home, it will turn slightly of a show piece for those interested in buying a future unbuilt project based on the same concept. We’d too like to fix some unspoilt professional photos taken of the home for PR purposes, so the inner design is not something to accept gently.

And then what is the appropriate what to plan the interior of the 100K House. For the first time of all there is the budget. It simply wouldn’t appear correct to couch $25K worth of furnishings into a house whose claim to “fame” is it’s low-toned construction budget of $100K. At the same time, it would be short and irresponsible to fill up it all with IKEA and compromised thrift store finds oneself. There involves to be a balance.

In our minds, the balance is between cautiously picked out thrift store/flea market discovers, custom got to pieces, reasonably priced newfangled furniture and a few designer flings. The thrift discovers could be from local thrift stores and flea markets, but they could as well be from ebay or craigslist. The custom pieces could be mere items made by our cabinet maker, Pappajohn Woodworking , or ourselves. The reasonably priced furniture could come from internet stores, local shops and the ever of import IKEA. At last, if budget allows, we could afford to splurge on a few classical design pieces from today or 50 years ago.

Youtube has been messing with the wizard quite a bit latterly. Broad screen, eminent quality and the drive me gaga pre rolls to subscribe among many others. (BTW, watching over the subscribe button scurrying around the screen was fun the first 300 times). But lets speak Youtube business. Thats the source of their desperation.

From all appearances, Youtube is straining to squash every last nickel they can out of Youtube. Overlay ads. Adding licenced content from major media companies. Segregating professional content like movies and TV shows up. They are geting along everything they can think of to produce advertizing inventory. Pre rolls, covers, display ads, you list it. And thats before you rile the inventory the creators of the videos insert and overlay in the content itself. Does anyone else out on that point call up that the advertising in youtube videos is more intrusive than any other form of content ?

Without spelling a dissertation on the subject, what are the agile and unclean conclusions that we can draw from all of this ? Why all the dire maneuvers ?

I learn two plausible options:

1. Youtube’s video delivery costs are far, far higher than the estimates we gift them credit for. Youtube alleges they have 13gbs of user uploaded content EVERY SECOND. At 12 cents per gbs, thats about 50mm dollars per year in upload costs. If over the harsh of a year, each of that video is caught but 10 times, thats another $500mm in bandwidth costs. If videos are seen more than 10 times, the number springs up exponentially. Thats a lot of money, but if that number bechances to be low-toned, its comfortable to find why Youtube would be despairing in this economical climate.

or

2. Youtube is truly pocked they are becoming to turn a loss, or may feel they have already turned a loss the Viacom case. They could dread a judgment that postulates them to breakup Youtube into 2 websites. One just with content for which they have licenses and the other for purely user brought forth content on which they have zero advertising. That doesn’t really effectual like Google, but their actions do advise they may dread they will have to negociate a settlement with Viacom and the other plaintiffs.

In a late NYTimes article they admitted to having lots of bodies behaving nothing but reviewing for porn. Of late they told they are starting to arrange higher standards for sexuality and profanity. If you can review for levels of porn, sex and profanity, you can review for copyright violations.

<substantial>Youtube looks to be working as if they have already missed the suit. Preferably than incorporating licenced content into the “community” of user brought forth content, they are faring everything they can to segregate it. That is coherent with what I would imagine Viacom would ask for in a settlement.</substantial>

If I’m Viacom, I inquire not but for a large chunk of cash, but too for them to halt going against the DMCA. The solution is for them to set up up 2 seperate websites. One for content for which they have licenses and on which they can trade promoting, and the other on which they have user uploaded content and on which they can not trade any advertising. That would assign them wholly in compliance with the DMCA and make up contented owners well-chosen.

The well news for Youtube is that other than the check they will spell, they are good on their way to licking this problem.<hard> A look at the current Youtube home page exhibits the novel reality of user brought forth content. Everyone needs to catch given. <warm> Rare is the wide reckoned video that doesn’t have a profit or stardom motivation.</warm> For everyone else, they put on’t truly wish where their videos are hosted. They utilise Youtube to accept advantage of the loose hosting costs and will be viewed by friends and family.</hard>

Where does that go away Youtube ? In reality in a far best place. Two websites. One of which becomes a video search engine , with out any advertising, that hosts purely recreational video. The other suits a Hulu on steroids. A destination site that suits a existent media site. It suits the ultimate content DVR where users can require to feel professionally made content along side the recreational videos that Youtube opined enough of to license.

This segregation would likewise think that Youtube could leverage all the monetization skills of Google and belike REDUCE the number and types of ads that have overrun the current Youtube. The Modern site could be planed to maximise user satisfaction and revenue sort of than skirt the language of copyright laws.

There is no question that Youtube is accepting monetization to an uttermost. Its either because their costs are more than anyone has judged or because they are stressing to crush every last dollar out of the current Youtube configuration before a large change
